| Dancing is something we humans have enjoyed more
or less, right from the start. We dance at special occasions, and
sometimes, we just dance round the kitchen if the mood takes us.
It gives us permission to lose a few inhibitions, and have fun.
Most females who dance (according to the UK Stats office) are
in their teens. Bellydancing invites all ages. You’re never
too old to enjoy dancing in your bellydance class! Some of the legendary
bellydancers like Fifi Abdou for instance, went on dancing at a
professional level well into her fifties, and a few years ago I danced with a lady at an event in Edinburgh who was 83!
So, unlike Highland Dancing or Jive, you can enjoy your dancing
for as long as you like and take an active part.
Many people who join their local bellydance class join because
they want a fun way to get a bit more exercise. When they get there,
they discover that this is not just ‘dancercise’ it
is so much more!
There is a rich culture associated with this form of dance, stretching
back maybe even thousands of years, to learn about. There is also
the music, which to new students sounds so different! It is exotic
and sultry, and again, has it’s own rhythms and instruments
to learn about. Then, there is, for some, the best bit: the costumes!
Some people even make their own.
